White Rapper Quota Has Been Reached

I started this post June 30, 2009 and for some reason never finished it nor published it. So here it is. As it was. From the vault.

OK so, I was in the club a couple of weeks ago (first mistake), and I heard this song.

The thing is, this song by The Lonely Island is a joke (i guess?), but as far as I’m concerned Asher Roth is as much of a joke as them and he’s not supposed to be (I don’t think?). The first time I saw the video for this song, I was in a club in Tacoma (needless to say, the DJ was horrible) and I thought it was completely serious. Instead of blaming this on the “current state of hiphop” as a lot of TLI fans have done, i blame it on white rappers whose selling point is privilege.

PostBourgie had an interesting discussion recently on hiphop newcomer Asher Roth, the white boy who claims he’s “bringing hiphop to the burbs”. I wrote Asher Roth off as soon as I heard the first line of whatever song he spits over Weezy’s “Cannon” beat : “You know the world’s gone mad when blacks wear plaid”. Oh, Asher. Because plaid is a white thing? Or is it just that you only grew up around white people so you never saw a person of color wearing plaid? It could also be that, from Roth’s perspective black people don’t exist in history and therefore, he wouldn’t know that tartan and plaid have a multi-racial and -national history, as most things do when they move from place to place and take on new meanings and associations. Seriously though, what a stupid thing to say…

It’s people like Asher Roth that make videos like “I’m On A Boat” believable.

Hes bringing hip-hop to the burbs?Hip hops been all over the burbs for quite some time.If theres two things kids love in the burbs its Dave Matthews band and Biggie.I mean they really LOVE biggie. In an interview asher said rappers had a huge suburban fallowing and THAT in itself justifies him going out and being apart of the hip hop movement.Like if he and his friends bought enough Jay-Z mp3s he should get his moneys worth and be able to become part of hip hop culture. If Ashers music was a joke Id think it was him trying to imitate some old school hip hop and all though I wouldnt like it,whatever, who cares. But it doesnt seem that way.Even if your rhyming for rhyme sake I would hope that you still wouldnt make such an Ignorant statement as You know the world has gone mad……Asher has givin us No indication that he truely understands what going mad is, yet he is trying to behave as such. What will happen when he learns that non whites are wearing skinny jeans? What state will he proclaim the world is in upon that discovery?

that’s the thing. i don’t understand why people think they can highjack an art form and act like they’re doing something that’s never been done before. hip hop has been in, and come from ‘the burbs’ before. shit, “rappers delight” was controversial because it was some kids from new jersey. as you pointed out with his quote, asher for some reason thinks he’s entitled to be a rapper on the virtue of him being white and from the suburbs. which.. is just not the case.

I think is classic, lol I think people are forgetting what music is about, it doesn’t matter what genre it is, music is suppose to bring harmony to a community, a form of telling story in an interesting manner, if his white and thinks his bringing rap back, then I salute the guy, let him try, copy or no copy some messages can only be sent across in a certain manner, not all mail are first class if you get my meaning, cause I notice black people tend to complain about things only when some one succeed were they failed… that’s my opinion…
